Review: Super Mario Bros the Movie (2023)

GO SEE IT IN A THEATRE!

“The Super Mario Bros Movie” is beautiful! A perfect movie for fans and late comers of the video game franchise. I took my son and my parents to see this yesterday and I for one thought it was great. My 9-year-old son had a blast and is going to watch it again. If you appreciate the significance of the Mario characters making an official leap to movie theatres, you need to go see it AT the cinema. If you wait for it to watch on your TV at home, you missed the point of it being a movie, otherwise you are just watching HD cut-scenes that you can do already.

When you see the new movie, watch and listen to how the filmmakers tied in all of the previous videogame titles that the Super Mario Bros were featured in. Look for references to “The Wrecking Crew”, “Jump Man”, “Duck Hunt”, “Punch-Out” and “Donkey Kong”. Some may be more obvious than others, but they are nicely peppered through out the background, story, props, and score of the movie.

The only gripe I had was the fact that they had to throw in a couple musical numbers from Jack Black as Bowser. They are short and don’t ruin the movie, but it may be the part where you can go to the bathroom real quick. The kids will be singing the song after you leave the theatre as well, so be ready for that.

The story itself is not hard for kids to follow, but the real trick to this one is seeing how it pays homage and reflects on the history as well as the modern aspects of this franchise. If a less than 20 year old is watching this, they may only get any reference to Mario games from after 2010 or post-Mario Galaxy and if an OG Mario fan is watching they may only get the the deep cuts stuff.

CLEVER MOMENT the first action scene with the Bros. has their van break down and they have to run/parkour from one end of a neighborhood to another, but the camera stays in a fixed position, profile to the scene. AKA a side-scrolling shot! It’s the only time it happens in the movie, but I thought it was a clever little scene of action.

OVER ALL The visuals and musical score are fantastic, The story is super simple, there is no Hard-Hitting message or moral, but a kids movie doesn’t need that all the time. It’s very kid-friendly and doesn’t feature too many Adults-will-only-get-this jokes. Also, I have to say, there are no fart-jokes in a kids movie! BIG WIN!
